4.2 Attendance Requirements and Expectations
California State Law requires schools to maintain attendance and punctuality records and notify the authorities of any student who is truant.
The Southern California Conference Department of Education requires a school session of one hundred and eighty days each year.
CVAS expects parents to ensure that their children arrive at school promptly each morning and come prepared for the classroom. If students are not at school, they miss out on pertinent information that is given throughout the day, lose valuable socialization time and may fall behind their peers academically.
4.3 Acceptable Excuses
The only valid excuses for an absence or a tardy are:
• Illness of the student
• Dental and medical appointments
• Death in the immediate family
Valid excuse notes should be submitted to the teacher upon the student's return. This note must include:
• Student’s name
• Date of tardy or absence
• Reason for tardy or absence
• Signature of the parent or guardian
The parents should call the school in the morning, before 8:30 a.m., if a student is going to be absent that day.
It is understood that there may be times, due to special circumstances, for students to miss school. Please remember, it is the student and parents’ responsibility to make arrangements for the completion of missed work.
When a student is absent 10% or more of the school year, advancement to the next grade level may be jeopardized.
4.4 Late Check-In/Early Check-Out Procedures
Students who enter a classroom late should enter quietly and with respect for the worship or regular class already in progress.
If a student arrives after 9:00 AM, he/she is to check in at the office prior to entering the classroom.
All students leaving school before regular dismissal time must be signed out at the office. Students will be released to authorized persons only.
4.5 Morning Arrival
• Cars must circle around to the right in the lower church parking lot and drop off students at the driveway.
• If you wish to accompany your child on campus, you must park in the lower parking lot.
• Parents are not to drive up into the upper small school parking lot during the drop off time (7:30 a.m. – 8:30 a.m.), except for rainy days. (see below)
4.6 Afternoon Dismissal
• Cars must circle around to the right in the lower church parking lot and pick up their students at the driveway.
• Cars are to form a line keeping to the right in the lower parking lot.
• Keep left lane open for exiting vehicles.
• Student must be escorted by an adult to their car when parked in the lot.
• Parents that want to visit with others are asked to park in lower lot.
• Students who have been escorted to cars that are parked must stay in the car.
• Students are expected to come promptly to the waiting area from their classrooms and wait attentively watching for their rides.
4.7 Rainy Day Procedures
4.7.1 Rainy Day Morning Drop Off
If it is raining in the morning before 8 a.m. and both black gates are wide open, you may drive slowly through the campus to drop off your 7th & 8th grade child at the lower building or your K-6 child at the library. Exit through the gates at the top of the school property onto Mayfield, which will take you out to Lowell. Please drive slowly and carefully at all times.
4.7.2 Rainy Day Afternoon Pick Up
If it is raining in the afternoon and both black gates are wide open, you may drive up through our campus, making sure to still circle around to the right at the lower church parking lot and forming a line up the hill. If the rainy day occurs on a Monday-Thursday, K-2 and 7th & 8th students will be waiting at the lower building and 3rd-6th grade students will be waiting at the intermediate building. If the rainy day occurs on a Friday, only 7th & 8th grade students will be at the lower building, while the rest of the children are up at the intermediate building. Parents are to pick up children at the lower building first, and then proceed up the hill to pick up their other children. If you do not have a child to pick up at the lower building, cars may circumvent the waiting line to the lower building and rejoin the line for the intermediate building.

Once a student enters after school care they must be signed out by the parent, legal guardian or other authorized person. NO STUDENT WILL BE RELEASED TO AN UNAUTHORIZED PERSON. Please notify the office, when a person other than those authorized is to pick up your children.
4.8.5 After School Study Hall
Parents may sign their student(s) up to participate in the after school study hall program. Held in the multi-purpose room on Mon-Thurs afternoons from 3:45 – 4:30 p.m., this program has been developed to serve our students who, because of carpools or parental job obligations, stay late after school. While it is always better for students to study and work in their own home under their parents’ guidance, we understand busy lifestyles and schedules are not always so accommodating. This study hall provides a quiet place for students to complete homework assignments and/or work on school projects under the supervision of an adult facilitator. Please note that this study hall is not a time for one-on-one tutoring; students are to utilize this program for quiet, individual work time. Parents wishing to sign their student(s) up for study hall must contact the classroom teacher and fill out a brief contract.
