7.     DISCIPLINE
At CVAS, we strive to create and maintain a safe environment for our students to work, play and learn. It is the responsibility of all parties involved – staff, administration, parents and students – to work collaboratively toward this purpose. Any adult or student who hears or sees inappropriate behavior should report it to a staff member or the administration in a timely manner so that the situation can be managed and resolved quickly.

Appropriate measures of discipline may include temporary separation from peers, L.A.B.s, or conference with the principal. Any discipline administered is intended to be the most applicable to the situation and most effective to the student. The staff and administration at CVAS believe that discipline, given within the structure of fairness, love and kindness, will help develop character, integrity and respect in our students.

7.1           Learning Appropriate Behavior (L.A.B.)
In grades 5‑8, the staff uses a system called L.A.B. for reducing behavioral problems in the classroom. Teachers use this form of assertive discipline when a student's behavior goes beyond predetermined limits. Students must realize that there are negative consequences to their poor choices and L.A.B.s provide an opportunity for this reflection to occur.

When a L.A.B. is issued, students receive a slip to send home to inform parents of the situation. The L.A.B. slip indicates the incident that occurred and the time and supervisor the student should report to the next school day. This slip must be signed and returned when the student reports to L.A.B. the next school day. In signing the form, the parent is agreeing and supporting the loss of the student’s “free” time to serve their L.A.B.

Time assigned for a L.A.B. can range from 15 to 30 minutes. A 15-minute L.A.B. will be served during lunch recess; however, a 30-minute L.A.B. will need to be served during lunch recess and after school. The time spent in L.A.B. is to be used to reflect back on what behavior change is needed and how the student can avoid future problems.

Each 15-minute L.A.B. received will affect the student's citizenship grade for the quarter by 5%. If a student reaches a C in Citizenship, parents will be contacted. If a student reaches a D in Citizenship, a parent conference with the principal and teacher will be requested and the student will be placed on disciplinary probation. If a student reaches an F in Citizenship, the consequences may include suspension or expulsion.

7.2           Disciplinary Probation
Disciplinary probation is a status indicating that the student has exhibited a trend of inappropriate behavior that is considered cause for serious concern. When a student is placed on disciplinary probation, it should be recognized that this is an opportunity for him/her to change their trend of behavior and make better choices.

If a student has been placed on disciplinary probation, the student and his/her parents will be required to meet with the principal and classroom teacher to outline behavioral expectations. If the expectations are met over the given time period, the student may be returned to regular status. However, if the student chooses to continue his/her inappropriate behavior, it may be recommended that the student withdraw from school.
